Dealing with False Credit Reports and Credit Report Errors
A 2004 survey by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group found that seventy-nine percent of sampled credit reports contained errors. Twenty-two percent of the reports had the same mortgage or loan listed twice. One in four of the sampled reports contained significant errors of the type that would cause a consumer to be denied for credit or employment.
Today, credit reports are used for much more than obtaining loans. Credit reports are used to screen applicants for employment. Credit reports are used to determine insurance rates. And of course, credit reports are used to determine eligibility for mortgages, auto loans, and credit. Given the importance of credit today, it is profoundly troubling to see statistics like those in the USPIRG study.
